Benzos and Alzheimer’s?

This is rather concerning: according to a new study in the BJM, benzodiazepines (Valium, Klonopin, Xanax etc.) may be linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

“A team of researchers from France and Canada linked benzodiazepine use to an increased risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. In the study, the greater a person’s cumulative dose of benzodiazepines, the higher his or her risk of Alzheimer’s.”

Check out the recent post in Harvard Health Blog.

Of course, as the article states, the study does not imply causation; the individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s could have been using benzos to deal with early Alzheimer’s symptoms. However, I think reading this study will make me think twice about popping a Klonopin!
